LOWA Boots, the global footwear brand known for its 100 years of hand-crafted Europe heritage, today announced it earned a positive rating for its initial Brand Performance Check from the Fair Wear Foundation. Based in Amsterdam, the Fair Wear Foundation evaluates the implementation of human rights due diligence (HRDD) within the garment and textile industry globally. LOWA is the first dedicated footwear manufacturer with predominantly European production to be certified.

“This recognition reinforces LOWA’s commitment to fair production and working conditions,” said Alexander Nicolai, CEO of LOWA. Sportschuhe Gmbh. “We joined Fair Wear as the first pure footwear manufacturer with predominantly European production to identify valuable opportunities for enhancement – for both our company and the industry.”

The multi-stakeholder initiative Fair Wear works to advance human rights in the garment and the textile industry. Its members undergo annual Brand Performance Checks that assess their progress towards improving working conditions across their supply chain and identify areas for improvement

Veronika Becker, corporate responsibility manager at LOWA, responsible for sustainability in the supply chain, adds, “It’s about tackling challenges and working with our partners and Fair Wear to create sustainable solutions. In this sense, the first Brand Performance Check marks an important milestone in a shared journey

Since joining Fair Wear in 2023, LOWA has shown its commitment to impactful human rights due diligence by formalizing its processes and focusing on collaboration with suppliers and other buyers,” shared Anne Van Lakerveld, brand liaison at Fair Wear.

For the first time in November of last year, LOWA published a sustainability report titled Step by Step, which outlines its sustainability strategy and provides insights into the risks and opportunities within its supply chain.

The Fair Wear designation is an important milestone for LOWA in the U.S.,” said Peter Sachs, general manager of LOWA Boots USA. “Consumers today care deeply about how their products are made, and this recognition assures them that LOWA is dedicated to responsible manufacturing and continuous improvement.”
