Nivia Launches 3D Finder, the World’s First GPS-Guided Avalanche Transceiver

New algorithm delivers a direct path to the buried person and exact burial depth up to 30% faster.

German company nivia is launching a world-first innovation in alpine safety: the 3D Finder, the first GPS-based avalanche transceiver. For the first time, an avalanche transceiver combines proven three-antenna technology with an entirely new 3D algorithm, making the search process dramatically simpler and as intuitive as using a car’s GPS navigation. The device will be available at specialty retailers this 2026/27 winter season, sold both individually and as a complete safety set with shovel and probe.

In an emergency, searching for a buried avalanche victim happens under enormous pressure. Traditional avalanche transceivers guide rescuers along curved magnetic field lines, often requiring multiple changes in direction and a time-consuming cross-search pattern once near the target. The nivia 3D Finder takes a new approach: in addition to reading conventional magnetic field lines, the device builds its own GPS coordinate system using nivia’s new 3D technology. The patented algorithm calculates a buried person’s location significantly faster and more precisely, so rescuers simply follow the arrow on the display and take the most direct path – no zigzagging required.

A key advantage during the final search phase is that the device shows the exact burial depth and guides the rescuer precisely to the first probe point. According to nivia, this can make recovery up to 30% faster* – minutes that can save lives.

It works as simply as GPS navigation: rescuers follow the direct route, so in an emergency, they can focus entirely on what matters most, without losing valuable time.”

The nivia 3D Finder is fully compatible with every avalanche transceiver on the market, transmitting and searching on the international standard frequency of 457 kHz. In an emergency, the device’s automatic emergency-call feature transmits exact GPS coordinates directly to rescue coordinators, helping responders immediately pinpoint where help is needed. The companion nivia app adds high-resolution maps for route planning, real-time weather and avalanche reports, and emergency contact numbers for alpine regions, and keeps the device’s software up to date via Bluetooth. A built-in battery lasts up to 350 hours and charges via USB-C – and if a smartphone battery dies in the field, the 3D Finder can double as an emergency power bank so a call for help can still go through.
