Whether they’re forced to shelter-in-place by a global pandemic or just tired of the daily grind, people all over the world are constantly battling boredom. So Onewheel maker Future Motion came up with an original campaign to ‘Destroy Boredom,’ asking their audience to create videos for how they beat the blues—whether it’s weird, wild, sendy, or silly. Over 3,000 entrants posted their crazy videos to Instagram (ranging from a “mini Onewheel unboxing” to an animated kitchen shred session) for a chance to win a Onewheel Pint.

“Riding a Onewheel is a refusal to live an uninspired existence,” said Future Motion co-founder Kyle Doerksen. “The #DestroyBoredom campaign celebrates the pure joy this product brings to tens of thousands of people and the mentality of our community. The response to our Destroy Boredom contest was an outpouring of creativity and enthusiasm that brought an entire community together when they needed each other the most.”

The winners were celebrated in an appropriately irreverent and safely social distanced awards show where awards were given out in categories ranging from “Best Animation” and “Best Use of Our Furry Friends,” to “Wanted It The Most.”

“We busted out the Wheelies because we felt so overwhelmed by the community response to the #DestroyBoredom campaign and felt like it needed a moment of celebration,” says Future Motion Chief Evangelist, Jack Mudd. “3,000+ video submissions and so much positivity across the board from folks in Italy spending their quarantine hand-drawing gifs with hundreds of frames, to families coming together to create funny videos at home. It’s struck a chord beyond Onewheel owners—reaching tons of folks who don’t own boards rallying around the hashtag posting their own at home workout, creative animations or making ‘wheels out of wood or cardboard. And yes, there are doctors riding in the halls for sanity and firemen sweeping the station on them.”

The #DestroyBoredom campaign has earned over 15 million impressions on Onewheel’s Instagram account. It has produced multiple Tik Tok videos with over 100,000 views, and a clip of a young boy towing his cat in a radio flyer wagon even graced the front page of Reddit.

“The content generated through this campaign has brought such positivity and relief to a world in despite need,” says Future Motion Chief Evangelist, Jack Mudd. “It’s been incredible to watch #DestroyBoredom evolve into a creative outlet connecting thousands of folks, from artists drawing animations in Italy to families spending this time together filming comedy skits. The #DestroyBoredom campaign has become a symbol of the imagination and spirit that brings out our best in this extraordinary time.”

In 2019, Onewheel’s parent company Future Motion committed to American manufacturing by opening the largest light electric vehicle factory in North America directly in the heart of Silicon Valley. “Our approach is to make magical, high-quality small vehicles that people truly love,” said Doerksen. “We believe that we are best able to deliver on this by investing in manufacturing right in San Jose.”

Future Motion products are available at onewheel.com and at select dealers across the U.S. and worldwide. Onewheel Pint retails for $950 (monthly financing options available as low as $59/month); Onewheel+ XR is available for $1,799 (monthly financing options available as low as $86/month). Fenders, high-speed Ultrachargers, and other Pint accessories are also available.
