Outerknown has just launched The California Series – a collection of heritage-inspired sweats made with 100% Climate Beneficial™ cotton, grown entirely in the heart of California’s Central Valley.
The Climate Beneficial™ cotton used in this collection is sourced from the California Cotton & Climate Coalition (C4), of which Outerknown is a founding brand partner. C4, a project of Fibershed, was started in the Fall of 2020 as a response to the historic loss of carbon stocks in the California rangeland soil. The coalition exists to protect rural jobs in California, manage landscapes that can sequester or release carbon, source from domestic farmers in a traceable and transparent way and partner with all parties in an effort to increase the health of the land while bringing products to market.
The Climate Beneficial™ stamp of approval was created to denote fibers coming from landscapes where carbon flow from the atmosphere and into the soil is being enhanced, and since it’s a practice-based verification managed by Fibershed, it supports farmers and ranchers as they shift their production methods. The cotton that comes out of the state of California is some of the finest in the world and Outerknown is proud to be contributing to a scalable system that regenerates the soil while providing end-use to the farmers.
The cotton used in this collection comes from two farms – Bowles and Stone Land. The cotton is ginned right down the road from the farms, spun at Hill Spinning in North Carolina (no spinners exist in California), milled at Laguna Fabrics in Los Angeles and is cut and sewn at Studio 9D8, also in Los Angeles.
