Ronnie Reyes Launches Premium Boardshort Brand

Ronnie Reyes, a design veteran with nearly 25 years of experience in the surf industry, is proud to announce the launch of his new premium boardshort brand, Commune Des Vagues. Based out of the SW of France, the brand embodies Reyes’ dedication to craftsmanship, timeless design principles, and small batch production methods. 

After years of designing for some of the biggest brands in the industry, Reyes felt compelled to create a product that matched the quality and artistry of hand-crafted surfboards. 

“I started to have this idea about 10 years ago with the simple observation that I didn’t quite see a brand focusing on boardshorts that matched the style and quality of the beautiful surf crafts that were becoming more popular. There were plenty of great products out there, but it was just an idea to do something smaller and more specialized,” says Reyes.

The brand name Commune Des Vagues loosely translates from French to “A community of Waves.” It was inspired by an impromptu dinner with friends and strangers in the small surf village of Guethary. The realization struck Reyes that everyone gathered there at that moment shared a deep connection through their love of surfing. This community spirit is the essence of Commune Des Vagues. 

The debut collection, launched in May of 2024, includes three distinctive styles: The Dream Sesh, The Chest High, and La Plage. Each style is meticulously crafted in Portugal using a blend of cotton and nylon, ensuring durability, softness, and comfort. Produced in small batches, these shorts are constructed with techniques that prioritize quality over speed and cost savings.

In addition to the shorts, the brand offers a curated collection of t-shirts, fleece, and hats, all produced in Portugal with the same commitment to quality.

The objective of the brand is to support independent retailers and foster a sense of community within the culture. The brand mantra is “Make Only What Is Necessary”, meaning to stay small, focused and dedicated to supporting small business.
