Stephanie Gilmore just signed a new chapter in female surfing and it’s one for the books.
The 34-year-old ROXY surfer took a historical win in Trestles, CA, an incredible title grasped at the culmination of an unbelievable sports exploit. With now 8 World Titles, Stephanie becomes the most accomplished female surfer in history.
AN ATHLETIC FEAT
Faced with an impossible challenge, Stephanie had to work her way across five 35-minute heats against the world’s top 4 female surfers: Brisa Hennessy (CR), Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), Johanne Defay (FRA) and Carissa Moore (HAW).
The demanding finals ended up being a perfect playground for Gilmore who ranked an impressive three 8-point waves in her first three heats alone.
After eliminating Hennessy, Weston-Webb and Defay, Gilmore came up against Carissa Moore, leader throughout the season. The final stage of the finals came to a close in two heats, with Stephanie displaying her world-famous style and poise on the Californian waves.
HISTORY MADE
With this win, Steph becomes the most accomplished female surfer of all times, boasting 8 World Titles spanning across 15 years. The Australian athlete ranks in the pantheon of surfing legends, second only to Kelly Slater who holds 11 world titles.
“I’ve visualized this SO much and today I was like, let’s do this! I’ve won a lot of titles in different waves, but this is by far the best win I have ever had. Plus, it was extra special to share the final with Carissa and to finally battle it out in the waves!” – Stephanie Gilmore, 8x World Champion, Surfing
This is not Steph’s first shot at making history: at 17 she became the youngest athlete ever to join the CT and in 2019, she was one of the athletes who contributed in the WSL’s decision to offer equal prize money for men and women.
