“SUMMER of ’66”, a surfboard design project, produced by Randy Rarick and Hawaii Surfing Promotions. A one hour documentary featuring ten vintage nose rider surfboard shapes, ridden by ten contemporary test pilots.

Filmed on the North Shore, during the early days of the Covid pandemic, this video was originally intended as an O’Neill Women’s promo, but blossomed into a full feature. Initial, O’Neill Team riders: Honolua Blomfield, Tessa Timmons, Journey Regelbrugge and Brittany Penaroza were joined by Leah Dawson, Rosie Jaffurs and male counterparts, Tosh Tudor, Willy Asprey, Link Earle and Keoki Saguibo as the project expanded.
Randy Rarick took ten vintage nose rider specific boards from 1966 and either repaired our restored them, so they could be ridden by today’s top loggers. Included in the line up: Greek “Eliminator”, Harbour “Cheater”, Yater “Spoon”, Con “Wing Nose”, Rick “UFO”, Bing “David Nuuhiwa Nose Riding Model”, Con “Ugly”, Morey-Pope “Snub”, Ramsey- Jay “Elevator” and a Gordon & Smith “Stretch”.
The film features vintage footage from the Tom Morey Invitational, which was the catalyst for the nose riding movement of 1966. Captured in full color from Sunset Beach, Hawaii the essence of the film is that fifty- five year old surfboards are still relevant in today’s world.
