Vans, the original action sports footwear and apparel brand, teams up with Octopus on a heavy-hitting, heart-pounding edit showcasing shared team riders Dylan Graves, Harry Bryant and Mikey February. Filled with straight surf chaos, the edit unleashes the raw energy and shared creativity amongst the group, and a sneak preview of the Vans x Octopus collection dropping later this month at Vans retail locations and Vans.com/Surf.
Filmed by Dave Fox, Paul Daniel, and Jorgito Rivera, edited by Matt Payne, and directed by “THE OCTOPUS,” the edit reflects Octopus’ loud and powerful yet stripped down ethos. The company was founded by a group of friends looking to create a new experiment that was solely owned and run by surfers – no big investors, no one to answer to, no rules to follow. This edit reflects that sentiment, as well as a shared vision with Vans of going outside the lines and taking creative liberties to help surfing stay wild.
“It’s literally a bunch of surf geeks hanging out, filming idea babies that Matt [Payne] and crew cook up— which is basically the whole brand in a nutshell,” Dylan said about working on the latest edit.
For Harry Bryant, the ride was an even wilder one: “When all the sample gear arrived at my house to shoot for the video, I was in the middle of moving and I accidentally took the box of gear to an Op Shop (thrift store),” he explained. “A few weeks later I was looking through the boxes and realized what I had done, so I went back to the Op Shop and purchased one of each item so we could shoot the product. I think people have been kicking around Wollongong in the Octo x Vans collab gear for a few months now thanks to those box’s getting mixed up.”
For Mikey, working on the edit was all about hanging with the rest of the Octopus and Vans team and creating something different: “Every Octopus part that comes out is always fast paced and super exciting to watch. It was great to put away the twin fins and try some fun stuff again!”
Over the course of the past six years, Octopus has stepped into their own, creating an instantly identifiable aesthetic and sub-culture with hard-working bags, grips and leashes that stand up to the punishment of the ocean and the road, and put through the paces by its versatile team roster. This high-performance gear is mixed with the not-too-serious approach to short video clips and content that the Octopus crew has become known for.
