We caught up with JPS Designs + Build partners Jim Smith and Chris Cole to learn more about their work with industry leading brand RVCA.
JPSÂ is a full-service firm that creates engaging, functional environments for retail, commercial, corporate, hospitality, and cannabis sectors nationally. They are based in Costa Mesa, California.
How did you start working with RVCA? Do you remember your first project, and when it was?

The RVCA buildout at Jack’s Surfboards in Huntington Beach, California, by JPS Designs Build.
Jim Smith: It must have been almost 15 years ago now when Pat Tenore, RVCA’s founder, randomly walked into my shop when JPS was on 18th Street in Costa Mesa. He asked what I did and said that he was interested in having some custom desks and furniture built for their office.
From that day we met, forward, JPS has provided design and custom millwork fabrication and installations for RVCA’s HQ, retail stores, shop-in-shops, fixtures, displays, and tradeshow booths. JPS has a long-lasting relationship with Pat and our friends at RVCA. We look forward to our ongoing partnership.
How would you describe your RVCA projects?
Jim Smith:Â RVCA has maintained a consistent look and feel through the years. JPS aligns with the RVCA team and brand well, which makes our design and fabrication process run smooth. They keep things fairly simple with respect to their retail and buildouts. We see RVCA being about living life creatively, and with authenticity.
Chris Cole: They tend to move pretty fast. That translates to a lot of projects.
Why do you like working with RVCA?

A RVCA buildout in Mission Viejo, California.
Chris Cole: It’s great working with them. They always have a solid direction, and that makes it easy on us.
Jim Smith: Their team is knowledgeable and easy to work with, which is why JPS enjoys the relationship we have with the RVCA team.
Why do you think RVCA likes working with you?
Jim Smith: Well, we are pleasers first and foremost. We’re 24/7 thinkers and doers. We are always available and will never leave a project unfinished. I think RVCA appreciates that, which is why we have aligned for so long. They also know JPS really understand their message and their brand. That’s most important to Pat and their team.
Chris Cole: I feel we are very responsive and provide great customer service. We have developed a great partnership.
What’s next?
Jim Smith: Currently working on a bunch of stuff for RVCA – we always are. Keep an eye out for new RVCA builds all over the US and globally.
