Winter 2018 Highlights
- The US Department of Commerce reported that online retail sales, adjusted for seasonal variation, reached $130.9 billion in the third quarter of 2018—a 2.9% increase from Q2 2018.
- China’s Singles’ Day, which took place on November 11, 2018, became the largest e-commerce day on record, reaching $30.8 billion in sales—a 21.7% increase over last year. On Black Friday, which fell on November 23, 2018, total online sales reached $6.2 billion, up 7.2% from last year.
- In June, the US Supreme Court overturned South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., establishing that states can require online retailers to collect sales taxes, even if the retailers don’t have a physical presence in that state.
