California Gold Surf Auction is hosting its next online auction of culturally significant surfboards and collectibles from March 11 through March 25.
CGSA is anticipating 48 prime surfboards for the timed auction. Collectable lots in the CGSA auction history since it began in 2013 have come from notable collectors and friends including Randy Rarick, Fernando Aguerre, Dan Pincetich, Keith Eshelman, Dick Metz, and Spencer Croul.

We caught up with CGSA Founder Scott Bass to talk about this auction.
Q: What’s new and cool in the auction this spring?
A: Well, we have a stellar lineup of surfboards by shaping legends including Pat Curren, Dick Brewer, and Greg Noll. But one unique lot that I’m personally excited about combines a surfboard and a leather jacket. But not just any leather jacket— this particular jacket belonged to Steve McQueen and was given to East Coast Surfing Champion Gary Propper.
You can see the jacket and some of the boards on YouTube at these links:

Q: What makes a board or memorabilia auction-worthy?
A: As a general rule of thumb I use the “Three Ps.” Provenance, meaning the chain of command of ownership and the back story of the surfboard. Pedigree, meaning is the board from a known and sought after surfboard builder. The final P is for Pristine. The condition of the board must be at least very good and ideally near mint.
Q: Can sellers still register for this auction?
A: To consign a board requires approval by the auction procurement committee. We look at images, vet the backstory, determine some other particulars to see if the board is a good fit each particular auction. It’s not as simple as just submitting a board.
Q: For readers who might not know, can you tell us how the timed auction works online?
A: You can register for the auction right now. Bidding begins March 11 at 5PM PST. Bidding continues for two weeks. Then, on March 25 Saturday at 5PM PST the lots begin closing consecutively, and they close every two minutes. So, you have to get your bid in before the lot closes.
