The Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) raised money for SHACC & the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) at their California Gold Vintage Surf Auction Presented by Griff’s this past Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Culver City Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium.
Surfing legends including Greg Noll, Tom Curren, Maurice Cole, Paul Strauch Jr., Wingnut, Rory Russell, Shaun Tomson, Tom Morey, Nick Carroll, Nathan Pratt, Allan Sarlo, Jericho Poppler, Craig Stecyk III, John Mazza & Barry Kanaiaupuni all gathered to watch a piece of surfing history go up on the auction block. The weekend started off with a VIP reception at the iconic Venice surf shop Surfing Cowboys, where guests mingled and got a preview of the items going up for auction. Over 1,500 people gathered the following day at the Culver City Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium to witness a piece of surfing history go up on the auction block at the CA Gold Vintage Surf Auction Presented by Griff’s.
Highlights from the auction included the sale of Greg Noll’s Sunset Gun, which he rode during the 1967 Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Contest, which sold for over $48,000 making it the highest paid in a surf auction for a vintage surfboard. “We had a historically significant auction,” explained Scott Bass, Executive Director of the California Gold Vintage Surf Auction. “Two separate boards broke vintage surfboard auction records, with the 1967 Greg Noll surfboard reaching the $48K mark. It was a great day of fundraising for both the Surfing Heritage & Culture Center and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.”
Additional highlights included the sale of George Downing’s Wood Gun with wooden fin box which sold for $40,000, Marge Calhoun’s ‘50s Era Velzy Chip for $28,000, Tom Curren’s infamous Stickerless Reverse Vee shaped by Maurice Cole which sold for $19,000 and Gerry Lopez’s personal Lightening Bolt which for $16,500.
