Zumiez May comp sales rise, while sales fall at The Buckle

Details about how two large industry customers fared in May, including categories that showed strong results.

Two industry customers reported May same-store sales this week.

Zumiez

Zumiez’s same-store sales increased 3.6% in May, the company reported Wednesday afternoon.

Sales in the last two weeks of the month were much stronger than in the first two weeks, the company said.

Strong categories included accessories, hardgoods, men’s and junior’s.

Weak categories included footwear and boys.

Year-to-date, Zumiez’s same store sales are up 2.2%.

As of May 31, Zumiez operated 564 stores.

The Buckle

The Buckle’s same-store sales declined 3.1% in May, with men’s performing better than women’s.

Men’s comps rose 4%, with strong results in denim, casual bottoms, shorts, knit shirts and accessories.

Women’s comps declined 4.5%. Strong categories included knit tops, sweaters, active apparel, dresses and footwear.

For both men’s and women’s combined, sales of accessories declined 3% and footwear sales were flat.

Year-to-date, same-store sales have declined 1.4%.

As of May 31, The Buckle operated 453 stores.
