Una Baker is connected. Very connected.
The wife of surf industry insider Dick Baker is helping to organize a surf contest to raise awareness about breast cancer. You can also donate online, and when I checked out the donation Web site, Gordon Merchant was at the top of the donation list.
Gordon founded surfwear giant Billabong in 1973 in Australia and is one of the richest men in that country, according to Forbes magazine. He gave $250 for this fundraising event. (Of course the donor could be some other Gordon Merchant, but that would ruin the story.)
Una, a breast cancer survivor and board member of Boarding for Breast Cancer, partnered with the Western Surfing Association on the “Surf for Awareness” contest. It’s Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at San Onofre State Beach, trail six. I can’t go, but I’ll try to get some images from the day to post next week.

With 16 divisions, there’s a place for men, women and children to compete. Plus, there’s a breast cancer survivor heat.
It costs $45 to register, and organizers hope participants will also raise $50 or more to benefit the Boarding for Breast Cancer foundation.
Of course there will be prizes, raffle tickets and all that good stuff.
