A few, small bright spots amid tough data from around the globe

Today, I've put together a global smorgasbord of data about retail sales, consumer sentiment and port cargo volumes to give you a snapshot of leading and trailing indicators about economies where the industry does business.

You can find some bright spots, but they are of the "could have been worse" variety. Australian retail sales, for instance, didn't crater as some expected, though they were down compared to the prior month, and not as high as some had hoped.

Australia is a good indicator for where the U.S. economy might be headed.
