The Newport Beach Film Festival will present World Premiere screenings of Cancer to Capricorn: Path of the Modern Gypsy, The Westsiders, Living it Forever, Make it Count: The Element Story and Camp Chuck.
Reef’s new film Cancer to Capricorn: Path of the Modern Gypsy, directed by Russell Brownley, follows surfers Mick Fanning, Rob Machado and Tonino Benson around the world as they travel to exotic locations in search of new cultural experiences and the perfect surf. From surfing innovations to gritty localism, The Westsiders, directed by Josh Pomer, follows the rise and fall of The Westsiders surf gang through the eyes of three best friends from the original ‘Surf City’: Santa Cruz, Calif. Best friends Daryl ‘Flea’ Virostko, Shawn ‘Barney’ Barron, and Jason ‘Ratboy’ Collins bonded by common tragedy and their love of surfing.
A feature film debut from Orange County filmmakers Ann Chatillon and Rick Chatillon, Living it Forever, chronicles the mid-1950s through the 1960s in Newport Beach, known as an epic era for surfboard riding. The film features Ilima Kalama, David Nuuhiwa, John Peck, Ed Hardy and Mike Marshall.
From its humble beginnings, to a forward thinking global brand, Make it Count: The Element Story covers two decades of iconic imagery and moments told by the very people that shaped Element today. The film follows Johnny Schillereff and digs into his history, interviewing the very people that have shaped his life and the company.
Starring X-Games gold medalist Chuck Carothers, director Marc Salomon’s Camp Chuck takes us behind-the-scenes in a personal all access look at the fun, the fear, and the determination that is crucial to making it in freestyle motocross.
Co-produced by ChopShop, Orange County’s leading action sports and lifestyle production company, with promotional support by Blue C Advertising and Travis Poe, the NBFF Action Sports Film Series will spotlight 25 films from around the world, including feature length documentary, narrative and short films.
Entertaining and inspirational, the Action Sports Film Series will celebrate athletes pushing limits in some of the world’s most challenging and spectacular outdoor playgrounds and give filmgoers an opportunity to experience breathtaking cinematography, cultural journeys, in depth portrayals and compelling stories that explore the physical, emotional, historical and spiritual realms of surfing, skiing, snowboarding, motocross, wakeboarding, mountain biking, mountaineering and more.
Highlights include world premieres, filmmaker panels, athlete guest appearances, autograph signings and the participation of action sports retailers.
The NBFF will present the North American Premiere of Stefan Hunt and Jonno Durant’s documentary Somewhere Near Tapachula and West Coast Premiere screenings of Red Bull Project X, starring Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, FUEL TV’s Machotaildrop and James Kleinert’s ski mountaineering adventure film The Edge of Telluride.
The NBFF will present a special Orange County premiere screening of Ultimate Wave Tahiti – 3D, Quiksilver’s new film featuring Kelly Slater and Raimana Van Bastolaer. The films Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story, Black Winter, BoardHeads, Cypher Vision, A Day at The Park Skateboard Film, Fiberglass and Megapixels, Freedom Riders, Jesse’s Story, Last Paradise, Lost Prophets – Search for the Collective, Mount St. Elias, Parks Bonifay Documentary, Ride the Divide, Shaped and Tom’s Creation Plantation round out the lineup.
Films will screen at Edwards Island Cinema, located at 999 Newport Center Drive in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, at the Regency Lido Theater at 3459 Via Lido Drive, at the Regency South Coast Theater at 1561 W. Sunflower Avenue in Santa Ana and at The Studio at Sage Hill at 20402 Newport Coast Drive in Newport Coast.
Seeking to raise awareness of important issues through cinema, the Festival welcomes the Surfrider Foundation, Surfing Heritage Foundation and the Athlete Recovery Fund as the designated community outreach partners of the Action Sports Film Series.
The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. The Surfing Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, presenting and promoting surfing’s heritage for the appreciation and education of current and future generations; and to achieving our goal of surfing being more accurately understood, represented and enjoyed. Athlete Recovery Fund provides professional athletes in BMX, FMX and Skateboarding with financial support after a severe injury and granting funds for rehabilitation, equipment, long-term disability and educational scholarships.
