Press Release:

Hawaii Ocean Film Festival Submission Deadline June 15th.

Feature length films about marine resources, ocean recreation, and our cultural connections to the sea, are due in Hawaii by mid June for the 2011 festival opening July 22-24 on the north shore of Kauai.

Priority is given to surf, sail, kite and tow films in the 9 – 30 minute range, with teasers and trailers for upcoming projects in the 3 – 7 minute range. “We would much rather see a well done teaser or short, than a sloppy or slow paced full length film,” said Festival Director, Meli Sandler.

“This year, two or three of the films we previewed in past years will be presented, and I think that is the best advice I can give to new, emerging, or international filmmakers. The judges and audience are already hyped, and we play many more shorts than feature length films.”

The festival has received films from around the world since 1999, and was named as one of “The 20 Coolest Film Festivals in 2010,” in MovieMaker Magazine. The festivals’ focus has always been on finding undiscovered raw talent, and bringing authentic films, to the big outdoor screens.

In between longer presentations they also include PSA’s and short films from organizations like Surfrider Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage, and Surfing the Nations to show what regional and community groups are doing to protect and preserve their resources, and share the love of the ocean and sports that breaks through borders and barriers.

International filmmakers are urged to test and pack their DVD’s well. To save on paper and valuable resources, press kits should be emailed or put on a separate disc. More information can be found on the website https://hawaiioceanfilmfestival.org.
