With the new Bethany Hamilton documentary “Unstoppable” showing in 200 theatres nationwide, we checked in with Rip Curl USA President Dylan Slater to find out how Rip Curl was involved in the project.
Rip Curl is Bethany’s longtime sponsor.
Was Rip Curl involved in the movie? If so, how?
Rip Curl USA President Dylan Slater: We were approached six years ago to support a project that would showcase Bethany as the world class surfer she is.
We sponsored the project, and over the course of that time, it evolved into a much bigger film, “Unstoppable,” which encapsulated her whole story in a personal and powerful way. Our nearly two-decade relationship with her as her major sponsor naturally fit into the story’s narrative.
How do you think the movie could impact Rip Curl?
Dylan Slater: We’re incredibly proud of our association with Bethany and everything she stands for. Our hope is that the film reinforces our belief in our team, their pursuits, and our position as the ultimate surfing company.

Bethany is such a well-known athlete – what are some ways Rip Curl has supported her and activated her over the years?
Dylan Slater: From supporting the theatrical film release based on her story “Soul Surfer” years ago to the Keiki Classic, a grom surfing competition we produced with her and longtime friend/teammate Alana Blanchard in Kauai, our strategy has always been to elevate and emphasize Bethany as the world class surfing talent she is.
Do you think women’s surfing in general could be impacted by the movie?
Dylan Slater: No doubt. Bethany’s story inspires an audience beyond imagination. From big wave riding to competition to progression, “Unstoppable” showcases Bethany as one of the best surfers on the planet, but it also shines a light on the incredible elite level of women’s surfing right now, which is great for the sport.
