Big snow culture is more than just powder days in the mountains. It’s about the quest for the ultimate deep powder experience, to travel to far away and remote destinations to meet and ride with locals, explore new cultures, experience vast landscapes, and of course search the mountains for deep stash pockets. For Winter 2023, SMITH and Japanese snow brand, Oyuki, team up on a design collaboration celebrating these experiences, notably in the epic Niseko area on the northern island of Hoikkaido.
Illustrated by artist Mike Shankster and gracing the new Method helmet and Squad MAG goggles, the collab features a full graphic interpretation of the mythical Japanese Yōkai, translated into ‘strange apparition’, a class of supernatural entities and spirits popular in Japanese folklore. Centered around the shared brand ethos of experience and combining Oyuki’s premium materials with SMITH’s best in class technologies, the collab showcases and celebrates winters in the Land of the Rising Sun when the area is literally buried by snow for much of winter, slowing life and stirring up endless opportunity for adventure.
