Today, Sanuk released their short film titled Questionable Decisions, starring their surf ambassadors Albee Layer, Torrey Meister, and Matt Meola. The film follows Albee and Torrey as they travel halfway across the globe chasing a swell set to hit a break in Portugal called “The Cave” and run into an unexpected swell that is hitting Albee’s hometown break in Maui called “Jaws” at the same time. The guys are forced to make the decision of whether to stay in Portugal and surf the mutant wave or rush back to Maui to surf the contest at Jaws with their colleague Matt Meola – or can they have the best of both worlds and catch both swells?
The original idea was to get Albee, Torrey and Matt on a reunion trip together. That trifecta of Sanuk ambassador (while sometimes in harmony on Maui for big waves) hadn’t really gotten together for a proper surf adventure in ages. So, it was time to get the band back together, through Sanuk, to chase swell…literally. Albee and Torrey had their sights firmly set on Portugal, so they set off to follow a big swell on the charts that looked promising right off that bat. A couple of days into the trip, the swell started to blossom, and so did a new swell forecast on Maui (Albee’s home island). This wouldn’t present a conflict for many people, but for Albee, a chance to surf his home break of Jaws in epic conditions did.
Albee wrestled with the thoughts “stay or go?” “Caves or Jaws?” and decided to book a flight for the next morning back to Maui so they didn’t miss the contest. That was until they woke up the next morning and The Cave was firing – “best Cave ever, firing”. Torrey and Albee decide to forget their flight and surf this beauty of a wave, the wave they had traveled halfway across the globe for. And they scored. Three flights later and a fog delay in San Diego connecting to Kahului Airport, Albee and Torrey touched down in Maui, just in time (within 30 minutes) for Albee to make it for the contest.
Albee ended up making it to the semi-finals of the event but fell a bit short of that first-place position. To head up the homecoming vibe on Maui, the boys meet up with Matt Meola to share a few decompression sessions at Matt & Albee’s home surf spot of Hookina. The guys catch some fish and have a family BBQ to round of this journey.
