UPDATED: Dyrdek: I'm buying Alien Workshop

Pro skater, television star and entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek made a surprise announcement at the Zumiez $100k party last night.

He grabbed the microphone from Alien Workshop Co-founder Chris Carter and told the hundreds of Zumiez’s employees, athletes and industry executives in attendance that he is buying the legendary skate company from Burton.

Alien Workshop has sponsored Rob since he was 11 years old and is based in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio.

Rob told me after he left the stage that the due diligence has been done and the deal is all but complete, but the paperwork is not yet signed. But he said it would happen.

Rob said he feels a huge emotional connection the founders and to the brand, which he has been with through his entire journey from an unknown Midwest skater to a mega star. While some of his many businesses may come and go, he said he plans to own Alien Workshop forever.

Burton bought Alien Workshop in 2008.

Burton COO Mike Rees sent a global email to all at the company mid-afternoon on Wednesday confirming that Burton is discussing the sale.

Rees’s email:

“As some of you may have heard, pro skater Rob Dyrdek made an announcement last night at the Zumiez $100K party that he was buying Alien Workshop.

“While Rob’s message was definitely premature, we did want to confirm that we are in an open dialog with him about a possible purchase. At this point, please note that nothing is confirmed, and we will absolutely do a formal announcement when and/or if that transition happens.”
