Update 2/27/2025: Black Diamond issued another recall, this time for its Vision climbing harness “due to premature degradation of its specialized materials and construction,” according to the notice. “This has the potential to create a risk of serious injury or death.” The below was originally published on Feb. 18.
Black Diamond is recalling its Recon LT avalanche transceiver, this time due to a corrosion issue that may make the device malfunction.
The Salt Lake City-based company has recalled several pieces of avalanche safety equipment in recent years, and warned investors last month that it had received subpoenas from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah as part of an investigation.
The investigation is related to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission’s (CPSC) conclusion that it did not respond quickly enough to a problem with avalanche transmitters distributed by Black Diamond, according to documents filed by Clarus with the SEC in January. CPSC also said Clarus and Black Diamond misrepresented the issue and recommended that it impose “substantial civil monetary penalties,” according to background included in its fiscal 2023 report.
In the newest recall announced Friday, Black Diamond has received six consumer reports related to the issue with the Recon LT, with no injuries, accidents, or fatalities, according to the news release. Owners are advised to immediately stop using it because potential corrosion of the device’s switch could turn the device off. Recon LT owners can receive a refund, a repair, or an exchange for a new model.
The Recon LT avalanche transceiver was subject to a recall in March 2023 because it could unexpectedly enter search mode.
This most recent recall affects all Black Diamond Recon LT transceivers manufactured and sold between June 1, 2021 and Feb. 14, 2025, with serial numbers starting with the range 2040 to 2321. The serial number can be found by connecting the transceiver to the PIEPS app via Bluetooth.
In addition to the previous Recon LT avalanche transceiver recall, Black Diamond also announced repair solutions and recalls of other products in recent years including:
- PIEPS Pro IPS Avalanche Transceiver (November 2024)
- PIEPS and Black Diamond branded avalanche transceivers (July 2022)
- Pieps DSP Recall (April 2021)
