Influential surf seamstress Sato Hughes, who became the driving force behind Kanvas by Katin custom trunks worn by surfers such as Gerry Lopez and Eddie Aikau, died Saturday.
The Katin team sent SES the following obituary:
“Sato Hughes, a legendary figure in the surfwear industry and beloved seamstress, passed away peacefully at her Los Alamitos, California, home on September 28th, 2024, at the age of 96.
“Born in Kawasaki, Japan, in 1928, Sato developed her sewing skills early in life. After moving to the U.S. in the early 1960s, she began working at a local dry cleaning shop, where her remarkable talent caught the attention of Walter and Nancy Katin.

“In 1961, Sato joined the Katin team as a seamstress, where her meticulous craftsmanship helped revolutionize surfwear. With her dedication and skill, Sato became the driving force behind Kanvas by Katin, creating custom trunks that became iconic among surfers, including legends like Gerry Lopez, Midget Farrelly, and Eddie Aikau.
“Despite her monumental impact on the surfwear industry, Sato remained humble, often referring to herself as ‘just an ordinary seamstress.’ Her work ethic was legendary; she could often be found sewing late into the night and arriving at the shop before dawn.

“Beyond her contributions to surf culture, Sato was a cherished mother to her son, Glenn, and daughter-in-law Kim, and adored grandmother to Marshall.
“Known for her resilience and love of the sea, she often took long walks along the Seal Beach Pier, where she drew inspiration from the ocean.
“Her handmade trunks and beautiful spirit, will continue to be celebrated by the surfing community and fans alike.”
