L.L.Bean is reducing its workforce for the second time this year. Between 50 and 75 workers will be affected – or between 2% and 3% of its Maine workforce, according to a statement provided by the company.

“As the company continues to evaluate the fluctuating retail landscape and adapt our organizational design to enable long-term growth, we will implement a small, focused workforce reduction to better align resources with company goals and objectives,” reads the statement.

“Some departures will be voluntary and impacted employees will be provided severance packages and outplacements services.”

The company reduced its customer service workforce and earlier this year, attributing the move to the increasing popularity of online shopping, according to the New York Post.

L.L.Bean has also been busy expanding its retail footprint, renovating its Freeport, Maine, flagship campus, and expanding its wholesale partnerships.

“Workforce reductions are always difficult and never a decision we make lightly,” concludes the statement about the layoffs. “We are committed to supporting those impacted with empathy, respect, and care just as we are committed to sustainable growth and building a strong future for our stakeholders.”
