Reef Expands Fanning Bottle Opener Sandal Franchise

Reef introduces four new styles in its Fanning franchise for Spring 2026 as it celebrates 21 years.

Reef is expanding its Fanning sandal franchise, which is known for its built-in bottle opener, with four new styles.

Developed with surfer Mick Fanning and launched in 2005, the sandal became popular because of the novelty factor combined with performance and comfort features.

“What makes the Fanning so unique is that it doesn’t speak to just one person; it resonates differently depending on who you are and what you value, whether that’s nostalgia, performance, or everyday comfort,” said Taylor Leopold, Reef’s senior director of men’s product, in a statement.

Reef’s New Fanning Models

To mark the 21st anniversary, Reef is expanding the Fanning franchise for Spring/Summer 2026 with four new models:

  • Fanning +
  • Fanning + Slide
  • Fanning H2O
  • Fanning Slide H2O

Each builds on the original with updated comfort technology, materials and design, while preserving what made the Fanning distinctive, according to a news release.

The Fanning + is an evolved version of the original, with enhanced cushioning, comfort and innovation such as Reeflex EVA, which balances cushion and support underfoot. It also features molded memory foam straps with shockpads and an oversized translucent airbag heel to maximize support and minimize fatigue.

The Fanning + Slide brings the same comfort to a slip-on silhouette. Designed for post-sport recovery and all-day wear, it features responsive cushioning, supportive contouring and modernized styling.

The Fanning H2O and Fanning Slide H2O bring a fully molded, water-friendly, quick-dry construction, extending the franchise into new environments while preserving its recognizable design lines.

Reef will also debut a new campaign, “The Fanning Turns 21,” featuring surfers and personalities including Billy Kemper, Makoa Ho, Mason Ho, Noah Beschen, and additional talent from the surf community. The campaign was developed in partnership with Party Land.

The next chapter of the Fanning franchise and the accompanying brand campaign launches April 9 at reef.com.
