Firewire Surfboards Launches the Spun Honey by Dan Mann

The Spun Honey takes the proven Spitfire platform and updates it for today's most progressive surfers.
Published: June 11, 2026 Press Release

Firewire Surfboards is proud to introduce the Spun Honey by Dan Mann, a refined, high-performance groveler. Based on Dan’s popular Spitfire model, the Spun Honey features a short, compact outline with a wide point positioned slightly behind center while remaining farther forward than Dan’s Sweet Potato. Combined with a tapered diamond tail, the result is a board that delivers exceptional speed, lift, and responsiveness in everyday surf.

Underneath, the Spun Honey features an aggressive double concave set within a pronounced single concave, similar to the bottom contours found in the Sweet Potato. The double concave extends farther toward the nose than on most boards, generating speed, lift, and fluid rail-to-rail transitions. Dan adapted this design from lessons learned through the development of his Slater Designs S-Boss and Boss Up models.

The board also incorporates Dan’s signature step rail design, first introduced on the Spitfire and later featured on the Mashup. This allows significant volume to be hidden through the center of the board while maintaining sensitive, performance-oriented rails.

Positioned between the Sweet Potato and the Dominator 2.0 in the Mannkine lineup, the Spun Honey delivers a step up in performance from the Sweet Potato while offering a more forgiving feel than the Dominator 2. Whether you’re groveling weak waves, in shorebreak barrels, or launching into air sections, the Spun Honey delivers a fast, versatile ride with a lively edge.

Fresh off back-to-back Stab in the Dark wins — a win with Kelly Slater and a runner-up result with Ethan Ewing, both on his Slater Designs DRK shape — Dan Mann brings that same blend of performance and accessibility to the Spun Honey. “The plan for this shape was simple: fun, performance, and accessibility for all kinds of different surfers,” says Dan Mann. “I wanted something with a little extra foam under the chest to maximize paddling, speed, and wave-catching, while still maintaining the responsiveness and performance I look for in my own shapes. I’ve been riding the Spun Honey a lot in both Costa Rica and California, and it’s been an absolute blast.”

Board Features

The Spun Honey takes the proven Spitfire platform and updates it for today’s most progressive surfers. The shape features a bullet nose, diamond tail, and a slightly more pulled-in outline than the Sweet Potato. The rocker curve is similar to the Baked Potato, balancing speed and maneuverability. Because of the board’s wide tail and generous planing area, Dan incorporated a single point at the tail to act as a fulcrum, helping direct water flow efficiently and preventing the tail from feeling overly loose. The rails remain sensitive and performance-oriented, while the stepped rail design conceals additional volume beneath a flat deck. Extra foam under the chest improves paddling and wave-catching ability without sacrificing responsiveness in the pocket.

Wave Type

The Spun Honey was designed primarily as a performance groveler for small, weak, and gutless surf. However, Firewire team riders have successfully pushed the board into head-high to overhead hollow waves, where it has continued to perform exceptionally well. Whether you’re groveling weak waves, threading shorebreak barrels, or hunting air sections, the Spun Honey is the board you’ll want in your quiver for maximizing fun in a wide range of conditions.

Technology:

Helium Core with Fiberglass Lamination; The Spun Honey is built using Firewire’s Helium construction, featuring a stringerless EPS core with flex controlled through with paulownia rail reinforcements, paired with Firewire’s proprietary deck skins. The result is a lightweight, lively board that generates speed effortlessly while maintaining durability and responsiveness.

Introducing the Spun Honey Fin Set – coming soon.

Designed alongside the Spun Honey, Dan Mann’s new Spun Honey Fin Set was created to complement the board’s versatility and perform across a wide range of fin configurations.

Falling within the pivot-template category, the fins blend drive, release, and maneuverability. The template features a long base, raked tip, and relatively shallow depth, generating powerful drive from the lower portion of the fin while maintaining quick release and pivot through turns. A refined, performance-oriented tip enhances responsiveness without feeling overly stiff or cumbersome. The fin utilizes a clean 80/20 foil with smooth tapering and no abrupt transitions, promoting efficient water flow and a balanced flex pattern. Constructed from a traditional fiberglass layup, the Spun Honey Fin Set delivers a familiar flex characteristic that closely resembles the feel of glass-on fins.

Single-tab variants are compatible with Futures fin systems.

The Spun Honey Fin Set was designed specifically for this board which comes standard with a five fin setup which exemplifies its versatility. The Spun Honey performs well with a variety of fin setups. Dan has been riding it with both the Spun Honey and Mannkine Fin Sets, while Kevin Schultz has been experimenting with 2+1 configurations. Other team riders have found success with the Mannkine fins, Kelly Slater’s Endorfins, and Rob Machado’s 2+1 setups.
