For a quarter century, Kristine McDivitt Tompkins and Douglas R. Tompkins—before his death in 2015 following a kayaking accident—worked together to save wildlife and wild habitat.
Well-known in the outdoor community, Kris as the former CEO of Patagonia, Inc. and Doug as the founder of The North Face and cofounder of Esprit, the Tompkinses left the business world in the early 1990s and turned their entrepreneurial talents to saving nature’s beauty and diversity. Their personal trajectory as ski racers, paddlers, mountaineers, and surfers led both Kris and Doug from a life of adventure in wild lands and waters to a life devoted to their protection. The result of their partnership is unprecedented success as national park-focused philanthropists.
