It’s good to be green. At Turtle Bay we take sustainability seriously. That’s why this year we transformed our roof into a green one. We installed 1,500 solar panels across more than 30,000 square feet that provide 8 percent of Turtle Bay’s daily average electricity demand. Turtle Bay is the first resort property in Hawaii to complete a major solar project that significantly reduces its carbon footprint. The lower rooftops have also been fully renovated with herb gardens and rock wave designs that reduce heat gain and improve energy efficiency while improving aesthetic appeal. Our roof mixed with our green practices earned us the STOKE certification.
What is STOKE? STOKE is the world’s first sustainability certification program for surf and ski tourism operators. STOKE looks at more than 140 quantifiable measures and 320 indicators of sustainability specifically designed for the surf tourism sector.  To be certified a resort must (amongst many other things) dispose of liquid and solid waste effectively, use available renewable energy sources and reduce their carbon footprint, harvest and conserve rainwater, contribute to environmental conservation, pay fair wages through legal contracts with benefits, support local businesses, contribute to local cultural activities and respect local customs, as well as enforcing proper surf etiquette.
We’re stoked to be STOKED Certified and will continue to champion taking care of the place we live and love – The Fabled North Shore.
