Shorebreak Hotel and other Huntington Beach venues are currently helping to host “Surfboards on Parade,” a unique event for which acclaimed artists are invited to create art on surfboards shaped by acclaimed shapers. Proceeds from the event benefit will be used to support education and research on skin cancer.

Why did Shorebreak decide to get involved as a sponsor of Surfboards on Parade?

It was truly a natural fit for the Shorebreak to be involved with this great program.  Part of being a Joie de Vivre hotel is that we want to be part of the community and play a role in all the happenings that make the city what it is.  Being such a surf-oriented hotel, it made sense to take part in Surfboards on Parade and have one of these great boards displayed in our Zimzala restaurant.  Plus the overall cause to raise funds for the Hoag Family Skin Cancer Institute was something we just had to get involved with. The board will be here through the U.S. Open and then it will be auctioned off as part of the fundraising.

Tell us more about the amazing surfboard currently on display in your lobby!

The board we are showcasing was created by artist Dave Hobrecht.  He used a board that was shaped by Al Merrick and actually ridden in competition by the legendary Kelly Slater.  One side of the board is a beautiful rendering of Slater during the U.S. Open here in HB.  The other side is left as is with sponsor logos and the surf wax still on from the day he came out of the surf after winning. Dave, the artist, has a great affinity for Huntington Beach and Kelly Slater so it was a great fit.
