OluKai, the premium footwear brand inspired by Hawaiʻi, today announced Crossings, a short documentary film featuring three-time Stand Up Paddle (SUP) foil world champion Edo Tanas. The film follows Edo as he sets out on an extraordinary journey that connects the Hawaiian Islands in a way no one has before. Crossings has been selected for the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF), which begins on October 23rd, with its world premiere screening on October 25th.
Crossings follows Edo’s solo foiling odyssey from Hawaiʻi Island to Kauaʻi, powered by nothing but his own endurance and grit. Over three consecutive days, he takes on 270 miles of open ocean and three treacherous channels, a feat never before attempted in the sport of foiling.
The film reflects how culture and community are woven into OluKai’s brand, and how storytelling is one of the ways the brand stays rooted in Hawaiʻi. Its selection for HIFF, the only Academy Awards-qualifying film festival in the state, is a meaningful milestone for the project and for the community of people who helped bring it to life.
In addition to the screening at HIFF, OluKai will also host a special screening of Crossings at the Rivian South Coast Theater in Laguna Beach on November 14 at 6:30 pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with Edo Tanas. It’s a great opportunity to engage with OluKai and Edo while gaining additional insight into the film and his journey.
“I feel very grateful to have the opportunity to showcase my journey to the world. Over the years, I’ve connected with so many people through foiling but this time I get to share it on the big screen – which is truly humbling,” said Edo Tanas. “Being able to work with OluKai and HIFF has been so rewarding, and I am excited for the audience to experience this with me and hear what they think.”
Directed by OluKai’s Executive Creative Director Matt Lindauer, Crossings reflects OluKai’s deep roots in Hawaiʻi and its commitment to telling the stories of the people, places, and ocean that shape island life. Its selection for HIFF, the onlyAcademy Awards-qualifying film festival in the state, is a pivotal milestone for the project and a testament to the scale of Edo’s feat.
