SDSI (San Diego Sport Innovators) announced a leadership transition that will carry the organization into its next phase, as SDSI continues to support the San Diego lifestyle industry and connect businesses and people with the resources, support and community they need to grow.
Bob Rief, who has served as SDSI’s Executive Director for the past decade, will move into the role of Chair of the Board. Kevin Cox will step in as the organization’s new Executive Director, effective October 15. John Sarkisian, who has held the role as Chair of the Board for 13 years, will move on to help lead the Bill Walton Foundation. The move follows unanimous approval from the SDSI Board of Directors and reflects a natural evolution for the organization, with Rief taking on a higher-level leadership role while Cox will lead SDSI’s day-to-day execution.
Bob Rief stated, “I’m excited for what’s to come. Over the last 10 years the SDSI community has steadily grown to over 100 member companies. Our Walton Innovation Lab continues to graduate companies at a record pace, now with over 183 new companies. It’s time for the next gen: Kevin is perfectly equipped to lead SDSI and our industry into its future.”

Cox brings extensive experience in executive leadership to the role. He most recently served 12 years as President of Encinitas-based Electra Bicycle Company, where he led the brand through its acquisition by Trek and its growth into one of the largest bicycle companies in North America. Earlier in his career, Cox held executive positions in the action sports and technology industries and today continues to support local entrepreneurial endeavors. He has been part of the SDSI community for 8 years, including the past two on its Executive Committee.
“SDSI already has such a positive impact on our community and industry”, says Kevin Cox. “I’m happy to take on this role and help carry that work forward.”
As SDSI enters this next chapter, the organization remains focused on the mission that has guided it from the start: building a community of businesses and people across San Diego’s sport, active and healthy living industry, and connecting them with the resources and support they need to grow.
